Melia Llana Beach Resort & Spa: Adults-Only on Algodoeiro Beach

This is Meliá's adults-only house on Sal, set directly on the white sands of Algodoeiro Beach south of Santa Maria, with a coral reef offshore that keeps the water busy with sea life. The resort is built around two lagoon-style freshwater pools in tropical gardens, the YHI Spa, and an evening entertainment program that runs live music, DJ sets, acrobats, and professional shows.

It runs on the Meliá playbook rather than the Riu one: a premium tier called The Level buys upgraded rooms and service, swim-up categories open straight onto the pool, and a paid VIP package unlocks wider restaurant and bar choice. That structure is the thing to understand before booking, because the base all inclusive is real but deliberately basic, and the reviews split along exactly that line.

Six room types were bookable at the August 2026 check, every one with a king bed and built for two. Even the entry Melia Room is large at 431 square feet, and the Junior Suite stretches to 775. The Level rooms add the upgraded tier's perks, and the two swim-up categories open onto their own pool; guests score the Melia Guestroom Swim Up 9.4/10 across its reviews.

Two honest notes before you pick. First, the refund catch: the headline prices are non-refundable, and a fully refundable version of the same room costs $35 to $49 more per night. Read the rate terms twice, because the card used to book must be presented by the cardholder at check-in with matching photo ID.

Second, condition: most guests call the rooms clean and comfortable, but a February 2026 reviewer found his junior suite shabby with a balcony facing a road and the neighbouring hotel's goods entrance, so ask for a garden or pool aspect when you book.

The anchor is Mosaico, an international buffet with show cooking stations and indoor-outdoor seating. Guests name Nami Asian as the favourite specialty restaurant, and down on the sand the Bikini Beach Club is bookable online, with its show night on Tuesdays; the Bob Marley club sits on the beach as well. A poolside bar covers the daytime.

Now the fine print the brochure skips. A January 2026 guest's advice: buy the VIP package before or during your stay, because it gives a lot more choice of restaurants and bars plus €50 (5,500 CVE) per person per day to spend across different restaurants, not just one. The same guest urges booking restaurants ahead of time. A February 2026 reviewer was blunter, writing that it is not really all inclusive since there are plenty of extras they want you to pay for. On the food itself the reviews split: one calls the buffet a little bland, another calls it delicious and points out everything on a small island is imported. Budget for the VIP package if restaurant variety matters to you, and you will avoid the most common disappointment here.

The two freshwater pools are the lagoon-style, garden-wrapped kind rather than a single big rectangle, and the swim-up rooms feed straight into their own stretch of water. The recurring complaint is temperature: more than one guest reports the pool was very cold, and Sal's trade winds do the pools no favours between November and April. The other flashpoint is loungers; a February 2026 review describes a fight for a bed at the pool, so claim yours early.

YHI Spa runs treatments plus sauna and Turkish bath access, with a relaxation area serving tea with lemon or fresh fruit juice, and a hot tub inside the spa. Reservations are required for massages and treatments, so contact the property before arrival. A gym is on site.

The beach is the strongest card. Algodoeiro's white sand starts right outside the resort, with sun loungers, umbrellas, and beach towels provided, and the coral reef offshore gives snorkelers something to look at. A February 2026 guest summed it up: the location is amazing, just steps away from the beach, with Bikini Beach and Bob Marley clubs on the sand. Santa Maria town is a 5 minute drive, about €5 (550 CVE) by taxi.

The resort stands in the Ponta Preta zone on Algodoeiro Beach, a little further from Santa Maria's centre than the Cabocan cluster but with the shortest airport run of the resorts we cover on Sal at 17 minutes. One outing works on foot: the Viveiro Botanical Garden and Zoo is a 16 minute walk. Town is a €5 (550 CVE) taxi away.

The payment rules deserve a second read. The card used to make the booking must be presented by the cardholder at check-in with matching photo ID, and name changes on reservations are not permitted, so book on the card of someone who is actually travelling. The hotel accepts credit cards, debit cards and cash, and may ask for photo ID plus a card or cash deposit for incidentals.

Group bookings of more than 8 rooms can carry special cancellation policies. Pets are not allowed, but service animals are welcome and exempt from fees, a friendlier line than the Riu properties take. As an adults-only house it stocks no cribs and no extra beds.

The 24-hour airport shuttle costs €35 (3,850 CVE) per vehicle for up to four people and must be arranged at least 24 hours before arrival.

Melia Llana has an elevator, which most of Sal's big resorts do not, and lists a wheelchair-accessible concierge desk, gym, registration desk and restaurant, with the usual note that access may have limitations. Some facilities may have restricted access, so contact the property for specifics if a particular one matters to your stay. Spa treatments and massages are by reservation only, best arranged before arrival, and some of the resort's water is reused through a grey water recycling system.

Book It If

You want the cheapest way into an adults-only, on-the-beach week on Sal, and you are happy to treat the base rate as a starting point. At $266 a night it undercuts the adults-only Riu Cabo Verde by about $50, the rooms are bigger, and there is an elevator. Add the VIP package and a swim-up or The Level room and it becomes a genuinely plush stay for less than the Palace-grade resorts charge.

The beach position on Algodoeiro, with a reef to snorkel and beach clubs a short walk along the sand, is as good as the island offers.

Skip It If

You want everything truly included at the headline price, because the recurring complaint is paying extra for the experience the photos promise. Skip it too if you need flexible plans, since the cheapest rates are non-refundable, or if a warm pool is non-negotiable, as cold pools come up repeatedly in winter reviews.
